Muhyiddin dismisses reports of Ahmad’s senatorship offer

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has dismissed reports that Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said had rejected an offer to be made a Senator.

“Why should he be offered a senatorship when he is already the Mentri Besar?” the Deputy Prime Minister asked.

He, however, acknowledged that the leadership crisis in Terengganu needed to be resolved quickly as it was important for Umno to maintain its position in the state.

“The crisis has gone on long enough. All parties must remember that their main duty is to fulfil the mandate of the people of Terengganu.

“There must be a spirit of give and take and the problem arises within the Umno family. I will deal with this later as now people are busy with Hari Raya preparations and the mood is not there (to sit and talk),” he told reporters after chairing the National Social Council meeting yesterday.

The political impasse in the state began in April last year after Ahmad’s controversial appointment as Mentri Besar was not welcomed by those supporting former mentri besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

On the choice of the candidate for the by-election, Muhyiddin said it was common practice in Umno that the party leadership was given more than just one name to ponder on.

He said this was to give “space” to the party leadership to evaluate the choices objectively.
Muhyiddin was asked about reports stating that the Negri Sembilan Umno liaison committee would only submit one candidate’s name for the Bagan Pinang by-election.
